How Keith Passed His CCSP Exam

(CCSP Practice Question Video: Data in Use Security)

Passing the CCSP in December 2024 was an incredible way to end the year. My name is Keith, and after over a decade in traditional IT security, I transitioned to cloud security about three years ago. It’s been a steep learning curve, but also one of the most rewarding career moves I’ve ever made. Balancing this shift with being a divorced dad to two wonderful kids hasn’t been easy, especially during the holidays, but it’s all been worth it.

I started seriously studying for the CCSP back in August. My background in Azure certifications, like the AZ-104 and AZ-500, gave me a strong foundation in cloud infrastructure and security, but I wanted to expand my knowledge (and my career!). The CCSP felt like the next logical step!

The challenge wasn’t just the material; it was finding the time to study. Between traveling for work as a Cloud Security Engineer, parenting my kids, and managing the busy holiday season, it often felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day. My job requires frequent travel to client sites, leading workshops, and cloud migration issues. Even when I wasn’t on the road, the holidays brought extra family commitments, making it tough to stay consistent.

Like many others, I thought gathering multiple resources would be the best approach, and I eventually narrowed my study plan down:

My turning point came when I discovered Luke Ahmed’s CCSP course. His teaching style fit my lifestyle perfectly.

  • Luke Ahmed’s CCSP Course:

    • I listened to his videos during commutes, on flights, and while waiting in airport lounges.

    • Each video broke down practice questions into real-world scenarios, which helped me connect the material to practical applications.

    • His questions were tough but fair, and he covered every domain comprehensively.

I also supplemented Luke’s course with additional research when needed:

  • YouTube and Online Searches: For concepts I struggled with, like cloud encryption techniques and compliance frameworks.

  • NIST and CSA Documentation: Direct sources for understanding frameworks like NIST 800-53 and the CSA CCM.

My Exam Preparation

The CCSP exam isn’t just about memorizing material—it’s about applying what you know to ambiguous, real-world scenarios. Here’s how I structured my preparation:

  1. Domain-by-Domain Study:

    • I studied each domain in depth using the CCSP AIO and Luke’s videos.

    • After completing a domain, I tested myself with questions from the Official Practice Tests.

  2. Practice Tests:

    • I used the Official Practice Tests to gauge my domain knowledge.

    • In the final month, I used Luke’s practice questions to refine my ability to apply concepts.

  3. Exam Simulation:

    • About a month before the exam, I began taking full-length practice tests to build stamina and track my timing.

  4. Checkpoint Tracking:

    • During the exam, I set time checkpoints to stay on pace and avoid rushing or panicking.

Final Tips

  • Consistency is Key: Study little and often. I couldn’t dedicate six hours at a time, so I studied in 30-minute to 1-hour bursts.

  • Leverage Mobility: If you travel or have a busy schedule, use audio and video resources like Luke Ahmed’s course.

  • Understand Concepts: Focus on why something works, not just what it is. The CCSP exam emphasizes understanding and application over rote memorization.

  • Balance Life: Don’t sacrifice everything for the exam. Take breaks, reward yourself, and spend time with family.

The CCSP is a tough exam, but with the right resources and mindset, it’s absolutely achievable—even with a demanding schedule. If I could do it, so can you!
